Shortly after this incident, another video surfaced featuring a woman named Mrs. Nweze, who admitted to engaging in a forbidden relationship with her son, Obinna. She expressed a desire to end the incestuous act, explaining that her son had manipulated her into believing it was necessary for his business success or his life would be in jeopardy. The consequence of their actions was the dissolution of her marriage and strained relationships with her other sons, leading her to seek reconciliation with her family.

These cases are part of a disturbing trend of incestuous relationships in Nigeria, involving fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, and siblings. The narrative highlights instances where societal norms and cultural values are eroding, leading to an increase in such taboo practices.

In July 2023, a 46-year-old man named Jude was arrested for allegedly impregnating his two daughters in Abuja. The revelation came to light when one of the daughters reported the matter to her fiancé, a police officer. The accused father and his wife were accused of attempting to cover up the pregnancies.

Similarly, in March of the same year, a 43-year-old man named Abiodun Oladapo was arrested in Ogun State for allegedly impregnating his 19-year-old daughter. The victim, who was five months pregnant at the time, disclosed that her father had been coercing her into a sexual relationship since February 2022, threatening harm if she revealed the truth.

The rise in incestuous relationships is seen as a consequence of the weakening of societal norms, increased individualism, and the influence of Western culture, including the prevalence of explicit content online. Dr. Leonard Okonkwo, a Consultant Psychologist, emphasized the impact of societal norms on curbing such behaviors in the past. He mentioned the psychoanalytic theory, suggesting that improper handling of the attachment between a father and daughter during certain developmental stages could lead to incestuous relationships.

Dr. Okonkwo also noted that the emphasis on sexual freedom and the erosion of cultural values contribute to the normalization of taboo behaviors. He explained that while fantasy might mislead individuals into thinking there is nothing wrong, societal norms and legal consequences still act as deterrents.
