The engineering team at the Centre for Sustainable Energy at Kwara State University (KWASU) has successfully transformed a petrol-engine vehicle into an electric-powered one. Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh announced this achievement during a press briefing at the university’s main campus in Malete, Moro Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday, held in conjunction with the 10th and 11th convocation ceremony for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic sessions.

Professor Jimoh attributed this accomplishment to the removal of the petrol subsidy and the subsequent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). He highlighted the significance of this success in advancing the institution’s environmental initiatives and promoting innovative solutions for global environmental sustainability.

Describing it as a major achievement, the vice chancellor emphasized the positive impact on the state’s economy and the well-being of its residents. He noted that the electric vehicle initiative not only enhances the efficiency of automobile power but also contributes to a cleaner environment. Additionally, he mentioned that the project has attracted partnerships with the Kwara State Government and private institutions.

Professor Jimoh disclosed that three vehicles—a sedan, Hilux, and a 22-seater Coaster bus—have been successfully converted into electric-powered vehicles. He also mentioned that there is growing interest from investors in the product. The vice chancellor invited the state government and individuals with scrap vehicles to bring them for conversion at reasonable charges.

Furthermore, Professor Jimoh announced the commissioning of a plastic recycling plant at the Centre for Entrepreneurship, highlighting its positive impact on the environment by converting tons of plastic waste into pavement stones.
