AFCON 2023: How South Africa can beat Nigeria – Tovey
Former Bafana Bafana leader, Neil Tovey, has provided insights to the team on strategies to overcome the challenge posed by Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Hugo Broos’ squad is aiming for a spot in the final of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as they prepare to face the Super Eagles at Stade de la Paix, Bouake on Wednesday.
With prominent contenders like Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt already eliminated, the Super Eagles are seen as the frontrunners for the title.
In their last encounter in the competition five years ago, Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, and they are anticipated to face a tough battle once more, given the caliber of players in both teams.
Tovey, who led South Africa to AFCON victory on home soil in 1996, emphasized the necessity for players to display resilience in order to secure victory.
“The challenge against Nigeria will be formidable — it’s like a final before the final,” remarked Tovey to AFP via Daily Mail.
“Historically, we’ve faced numerous setbacks against them, including a heavy loss in a 1994 World Cup qualifier. However, in recent times, we’ve seen a shift.
“In Bouake, we cannot afford to adopt a purely defensive approach. That would play right into the Nigerians’ hands.
“South Africa needs to approach the game with a mindset akin to our match against Morocco — being solid defensively when needed but also applying offensive pressure.”
Real Madrid has clinched the LaLiga championship for the 2023-2024 season, officially confirmed following Girona’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the late match.
Carlo Ancelotti’s squad secured a 3-0 home win against Cadiz, courtesy of goals from Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham, and Joselu.

Ahead, Real Madrid is set to host Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final encounter, with the tie currently level at 2-2.
High-ranking officials at Manchester United are expressing apprehension over the possibility of Thomas Tuchel encountering conflicts with the club’s leadership if he is appointed to replace Erik ten Hag.
Tuchel is set to depart from Bayern Munich at the conclusion of this season, a decision that was announced as early as February. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new co-owner, along with his INEOS associates, are reportedly deliberating on Ten Hag’s future and considering potential replacements.
Among the candidates being discussed, Tuchel, who has previously managed Chelsea in the Premier League, has emerged as a prominent name.
However, as per reports from The Times, there are reservations regarding Tuchel’s track record of disagreements with higher-ups at his previous clubs. His tenure at Mainz ended in 2014 amid disputes with directors over transfer finances, while he was dismissed from Borussia Dortmund three years later due to a breakdown in trust between himself and the club’s board.
At least 11 teams have secured their berths in the upcoming season of the Champions League. These clubs have already confirmed their qualification based on their assured positions in their respective leagues.
Among them are Arsenal and Manchester City representing the Premier League, along with Real Madrid and Barcelona from Spain. Also included are Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich from Germany, Inter Milan and AC Milan from Italy, as well as PSV and Feyenoord from the Netherlands. Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain from France completes the list.
The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League will mark the inaugural season under the new format featuring a league phase comprising 36 teams. Two of the four extra spots will be occupied by the European Performance Spots.
