Democracy Day: CSCHEI Urges Tinubu To Prioritise Masses’ Welfare

As Nigerians commemorate the 26th anniversary of Democracy Day, the Civil Society Coalition for Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI) has urged President Bola Tinubu to instruct his appointees to prioritize the well-being of ordinary citizens in governance.

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Kunle Yusuff, the coalition praised the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people and acknowledged the strides made in democratic development. However, it emphasized the need for more focused efforts to address the essential needs of the population.

“Today marks a significant chapter in our national journey toward freedom, justice, and equality,” the statement read. “As civil society groups under CSCHEI, we applaud the resilience of Nigerians and the progress so far, while recognizing the need for continued improvement.”

The group called on the federal government to ensure that all ministries, departments, and agencies integrate public welfare and grassroots needs into their budget formulation and implementation processes.

“We appeal to Mr. President to instruct his appointees to truly prioritize the welfare of the masses, respond to their concerns with sincerity, and ensure that people remain central to policy and execution,” Yusuff said.

The coalition also encouraged Nigerians to embrace unity and patriotism, celebrating the country’s diversity and potential, while actively demanding accountability from those in power.

“As we mark this day, we also urge INEC, security agencies, and all key stakeholders to uphold principles of justice, fairness, and integrity,” the statement continued. “We call on accredited civil society organizations to keep promoting electoral transparency and accountability.”

CSCHEI noted that Democracy Day represents more than a symbolic occasion — it is a tribute to Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly the landmark June 12, 1993 presidential election, seen by many as the most transparent in the country’s history, and the subsequent struggle for democratic restoration.

The group emphasized that the day should inspire reflection, civic engagement, and a renewed dedication to democratic values such as accountability, inclusive governance, and justice.

“From the perspective of civil society, Democracy Day is a call to action — a chance to assess our progress, recognize challenges, and recommit to building a better Nigeria,” Yusuff concluded.

CSCHEI reiterated its dedication to advocacy, civic education, and grassroots mobilization as vital pathways toward a fairer and more inclusive society.
