Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, through his Aliyu Magatakarda Foundation, in partnership with Vision Savers Eye Care Centre, has launched the 2025 edition of a free community eye care programme aimed at assisting 5,000 beneficiaries across Sokoto State.
This ongoing humanitarian effort, which began in 2017, has already provided medical eye care to thousands of residents over the years.
The latest round of screenings was successfully held at the Sokoto North Senatorial District Office on Garba Duba Road, with beneficiaries expressing satisfaction with the services received.
Representing Senator Wamakko at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Almustapha Abubakar Alkali, officially flagged off the 2025 programme. He noted that the initiative initially screened and treated 3,150 people in 2017, grew to 6,000 beneficiaries in 2018, and now aims to serve another 5,000 patients this year. Services include eye examinations, distribution of eyeglasses, medications, and surgical procedures.
Alkali described the project as part of Senator Wamakko’s broader humanitarian efforts to uplift the welfare of the people of Sokoto State.
Chairman of Vision Savers Eye Care Centre, Dr. Kamal Umar, urged beneficiaries to be grateful for the senator’s generosity, emphasizing that clear vision is a priceless gift. He also encouraged patients to strictly adhere to medical advice for best results from treatments such as cataract surgeries, medication, and corrective eyewear.
He added that the Specialist Hospital in Sokoto will be the main center for surgical procedures and follow-up consultations.
The initiative attracted large crowds, with many residents turning up at the Sokoto North Senatorial District Office to access free eye care and other essential medical services.
