The Vatican has announced that the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV will take place on May 18, 2025, during a solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Square.
According to a statement released on Saturday, the Holy See outlined plans for the new Pope to meet with senior cardinals, journalists, and members of the diplomatic corps as part of the inauguration proceedings.
The statement also noted that Pope Leo XIV has requested current state officials to continue in their positions temporarily, until further notice.
The pontiff has expressed a desire for a period of silent prayer, reflection, and consultation before making any formal administrative decisions, including new appointments.
Part of the statement reads: “The Holy See Press Office announced that the inaugural Mass for Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, in St. Peter’s Square.”
It further stated: “The Holy Father has asked that the Heads and Members of the Institutions of the Roman Curia, as well as the Secretaries and the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, remain in their current roles on a provisional basis donec aliter provideatur (until decided otherwise).”
The Pope, the statement added, reserves the right to take time for “prayer, reflection, and consultation” before confirming or appointing new officials.
