Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has strongly criticized officials from the Ministry of Works, engineers, consultants, and contractors overseeing construction projects in the state, accusing them of unprofessional behavior and dishonest practices that hinder effective project execution.
In a video widely shared on social media, Governor Bago openly chastised the Ministry of Works, the New Niger Development Company, and project consultants for their negligence and failure to provide accurate reports on project progress.
He explained that he had halted payments to contractors due to the prevalence of these dishonest practices and inaccurate reporting.
Bago highlighted stark contrasts in project performance, noting that while some contractors had fully completed their assignments, others were still struggling with fundamental components such as drainage construction.
“Some are delivering excellently, while others are performing poorly,” he remarked.
“I want to categorically rebuke the consultants, the Ministry of Works, and the New Niger Development Company for their unethical conduct and lax approach to monitoring and reporting on ongoing projects in the state,” Bago said firmly.
The governor expressed disappointment that some contractors had successfully completed all project requirements, while others were far behind, unable to meet even basic expectations.
He reassured contractors with outstanding invoices that payments would be made, but emphasized that only those with proven capacity and performance would receive funding.
Alluding to possible collusion involving some contractors, Bago stated, “Many of you have your Certificates of Verification lodged with banks. I suspended the process because I am not convinced of their authenticity.”
“At my discretion, I will approve payments only for contractors I believe are capable of delivering quality work,” he added.
He concluded by stressing that the Ministry of Works lacks the authority to release funds without adequate oversight and verification.
