The Tiv and Fulani communities in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State have officially agreed to a peace accord aimed at ending the frequent clashes between the two groups.
The accord, facilitated by the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) under the leadership of Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, was signed on Monday and hailed as a major milestone in promoting lasting peace in the state.
During the meeting held at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo, Brigadier General Uwa explained that the initiative is part of the Brigade’s ongoing non-violent approach to conflict resolution.
This intervention was prompted by escalating tensions and unresolved issues between the Tiv and Fulani in the region. To prevent further violence and rebuild trust, Brigadier General Uwa convened a dialogue that included key stakeholders such as Gassol Council Chairman Abubakar Usman, traditional leaders, community elders, and security personnel.
He condemned the recurring violence and warned against vigilante actions, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law. He urged attendees to become champions of peace and progress, pointing out that true development requires unity and mutual respect.
Brigadier General Uwa also praised the local council chairman for his active support of the peace initiative.
Leaders from both ethnic communities agreed to end hostilities, promote dialogue, and refuse to shelter criminals. They also pledged to cooperate with security agencies and share timely information to prevent future conflicts.
Impressed by the outcome, Chairman Usman commended the Nigerian Army, especially the 6 Brigade, for their dedication to peace in Gassol, calling the initiative timely and essential for rebuilding trust between the groups.
The two communities signed a formal agreement affirming their dedication to the resolutions and committed to working with relevant authorities to ensure full implementation.
