Flood ravages Borno communities, leaves two dead, dozens homeless

At least two people have been confirmed dead following a devastating flood caused by heavy rainfall in Gumsuri and Wovi communities of Damboa Local Government Area in Borno State.

The flooding, which occurred on Sunday after continuous rainfall lasting between 12 and 13 hours, left widespread destruction and displaced many residents.

Preliminary assessments revealed that nearly half of all residential buildings in the affected areas were either severely damaged or completely submerged. Numerous families were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge on higher ground, leaving behind most of their belongings.

Locals described the situation as dire and have appealed to the government, humanitarian agencies, and well-meaning individuals for urgent assistance, including temporary shelter, food supplies, and medical support.

“We are completely overwhelmed,” a community elder in Gumsuri said.
“Many people have lost everything. We are worried that more bodies may be discovered as rescue operations continue,” he added.

According to a report by Zagazola Makama, emergency response teams are currently assessing the full scale of the disaster and working to confirm the total number of casualties.
