The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has responded to recent comments made by former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu about the widely discussed “rat infestation” incident at the Presidential Villa during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s extended medical absence.
In a statement released on Saturday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, said Shehu’s remarks validate earlier claims made by IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu regarding the lack of transparency in how information was shared with Nigerians at the time.
Shehu had previously revealed in his book that the explanation about rats damaging the Presidential Villa in 2017 was not entirely truthful, but rather a cover story while President Buhari was receiving medical treatment abroad.
In reaction, IPOB noted that this admission echoes concerns raised by Kanu years ago about misleading government narratives during Buhari’s absence from office.
“This confirms our earlier calls for greater transparency regarding the health and availability of public office holders,” the group stated.
They emphasized that the issue highlights the need for honesty and accountability in governance, adding that Kanu’s warnings are now being indirectly validated.
IPOB also used the opportunity to reiterate its demand for responsible leadership and the public’s right to question those in power.
While criticizing how Buhari’s health situation was originally handled, the group urged Nigerians to reflect on the importance of trust, openness, and accurate information in a democratic society.
The statement concluded with a call to the international community to promote good governance and support initiatives that uphold truth and justice across Africa.
