The Idoma Intellectual Forum (IIF) has urged Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to ease the growing tension within the Benue State Polytechnic community by promptly appointing a substantive Rector for the institution. In a statement released on Friday in Abuja by Dr. Sunday Ochigbo, the National Secretary of IIF, the group expressed support for Governor Alia’s commitment to revamping the educational sector in Benue State.

While acknowledging the governor’s decision to dismiss all heads of state-owned higher institutions with the aim of bringing in more qualified individuals, the group expressed concern over the delay in filling the vacancy at Benue Polytechnic, Ugbokolo. They noted that despite the swift appointment of a substantive Provost for the Benue State College of Education, Oju, and a Rector for the Alfred Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi, the process for Benue State Polytechnic has been protracted.

The group criticized the composition of the management team at Benue Polytechnic, describing it as unfavorable to the Idoma people and contrary to the principles of state representation. They highlighted the dominance of Tiv individuals in critical management positions within an institution situated in Idoma land as unacceptable.

Moreover, the IIF condemned the removal of an Idoma Rector and the installation of a Tiv acting Rector by the Alia administration. They denounced what they perceived as a deliberate effort to marginalize and disadvantage the Idoma people across various sectors in Benue State, including within a state-owned Polytechnic located in Idoma territory.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has suggested that the circumstances surrounding the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash warrant suspicion, including the potential involvement of MOSSAD, the Israeli intelligence agency responsible for covert operations and counter-terrorism.

Atlantic Reporters reported that Raisi died in the crash at age 63, with CNN confirming his death based on Iranian news sources. The crash also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others. This incident comes at a tense time in the Middle East, with ongoing conflict in Gaza and occurring weeks after Iran launched a drone-and-missile attack on Israel in response to an attack on its diplomatic compound in Damascus.

Fani-Kayode, in a post on his X handle on Monday, described the deaths of Raisi and other officials as a monumental tragedy and a significant loss to the world. He emphasized the need to thoroughly investigate the incident and cautioned against readily accepting the official explanation of bad weather causing the crash.

He wrote: “The loss of President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others, is a tragedy of monumental proportions and a great loss to the world. My condolences go to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the people of Iran.

“We still have much to learn about what really happened, but to those accepting the bad weather narrative, I say stop, think, and do not be gullible. Many are questioning whether MOSSAD was involved and if this was a black ops operation. Given the strange circumstances, I would not rule anything out.

“This is a terrible blow to those advocating for world peace and the cause of the people of Gaza and Palestine. Ebrahim Raisi was deeply committed to the Palestinian struggle. May his soul and the souls of those who died with him rest in peace.”

The Numana Community Development Organisation (NCDO) has expressed sorrow over the recent unprovoked attack and killing of innocent and unarmed farmers in Ambe village, Sanga local government area of Kaduna State, by gunmen.

During the tragic incident, six people were killed, and many others were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals.

In a statement to journalists in Abuja, NCDO President Comrade Ahmed Gani remarked, “It is alarming that kidnappings in our communities have surged recently, with reports of one or two persons being kidnapped every week.”

He further highlighted the worsening situation, stating that herdsmen have occupied ancestral lands, transforming these areas into hotspots for frequent kidnappings of innocent farmers. Some affected villages include Dangwa Ungwan Kafinta, Ninte, and Dangwa Ungwa Manzo.

Gani recounted a series of attacks in Sanga local government area: two people were killed at Lambari village on March 2, 2023; one person at Unguwar Madaki Arak on May 5, 2023; one at Gani Sarki on August 19, 2023; and five at Unguwar Ganye on February 8, 2024.

“These persistent attacks on our peaceful communities have become intolerable, especially now with the onset of the rainy season,” he stated.

Farmers are now afraid to go to their farms due to the escalating attacks, which will likely have a negative impact on the local economy in the coming months, Gani warned.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Kaduna State Government under Governor Senator Uba Sani to address insecurity, Gani urged for increased protection, especially in Sanga and Jema’a local government areas.

He called on the Kaduna state government to deploy more security forces to rural communities to protect residents and restore their confidence so they can farm without fear of attack. Gani also urged the state government to support those injured in the recent Ambe village attack who are currently undergoing medical treatment.
