EFCC invites Nigerien groom, family members who spray naira at Kano wedding

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to a viral video showing naira abuse at a wedding in Kano on October 24, 2024.

The incident was initially rumored to involve Senator Danjuma Goje’s daughter; however, her family strongly denied any involvement in the money spraying.

After an investigation, the EFCC identified the event as the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah. According to a statement on the EFCC’s X account, Zannah’s mother confirmed that the cash spraying came from the groom’s family from Niger Republic.

The EFCC stated it had summoned the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, along with others involved.

Part of the statement reads: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has noted a viral video showing the nation’s currency, the Naira, being freely sprayed at a wedding in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024.

“Upon reviewing the video, it was determined that the incident occurred not at Goje’s daughter’s wedding but at Amina Babagana Zannah’s wedding dinner on the specified date. The groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, is from Niger Republic, and it was his family who allegedly sprayed naira and dollar notes.

The EFCC has requested Mohammad and those who sprayed the naira notes to report to its headquarters in Abuja.”

Recently, the EFCC has charged Nigerians with naira abuse, including celebrity bartender Cubana Chief Priest, who paid N10 million to settle out of court, and crossdresser Bobrisky, who received a six-month jail sentence.
